The Lost Generation

Why does “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” included in The Lost Generation's work??

  • Because Ernest Hemingway's style is considered to have emotional understatement, laconic dialogue, and crispness. A lot of his writing deals with an inner conflict against circumstances which had different style of other U.S writers in 20th century.
  • Because Ernest Hemingway had a mentor (Ezra Pound) who built Imagism.
  • Because “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” didn't grew in America, but in Paris (Europe). Because Ernest Hemingway left the U.S. and write their books on other cities. After World War One, Hemingway moved to Paris to write instead of returning home. He like his fellow ex-patriates in Paris, was influenced by the harshness of war and the time he spent overseas.
  • Because Ernest Hemingway had a general feeling of disillusionment of American literary notables who lived in Europe, most notably Paris, after the First World War. So, he, Gertrude Stein, and other U.S writers built “The Lost Generation”. They were unhappy with American culture, the writers were instrumental in changing their country's style of writing, from Victorian to modern.
